The recent reports of possible dangers from ruptured silicone implants in France is not likely to be an issue in the United States. According to the Los Angeles Times the government is deciding whether to recommend removal of implants in 30,000 women – involves a type of silicone gel implant never used in the United States. Manufactured by the French company Poly Implant Prothese, or PIP, these contained an industrial-grade silicone and out of the 30,000 surgeries, more than 1,000 have led to ruptures. Fear over possible medical consequences of exposure to the silicone they contain — as well as a small number of cancers that are not proven to be linked to the implants — is fueling the concern over there. In 2010, 318,123 women in the U.S had breast implants, according to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, with most choosing silicone gel implants. Dr. O’Toole counsels women who are considering breast implants with a lengthy consultation that not only includes verbal information but also an abundance of written information both from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons as well as the FDA. Breast implants remain one of the most researched medical devices used today. When reviewing information concerning breast augmentation and breast augmentation statistics patients must be aware that the success of a breast augmentation procedure is dependent upon many different factors. These factors include but are not limited to: the health of the patient, the placement of the implant, and the skill of the plastic surgeon . Due to the popularity of the procedure, consumers have come to believe breast augmentation is a commodity and that any doctor can do it. While it is true that any medical doctor is permitted to perform the operation, it does not ensure that the procedure will be performed with expert ability. Dr. O’Toole has over two decades of experience with breast augmentation including both saline and silicone implants. While complications are possible with any surgery, Dr. O’Toole has honed his skills and uses his experiences to offer patients not only a better result but a better overall plastic surgery experience. Patients who have had their breast implants for over 10 years should consider the health of the implant and should have their implants checked. Dr. O’Toole welcomes patients for consultation who are considering breast implant exchange and is prepared to offer not only expert advice but also options available to the patient including leaving the implant in place if the implant is not compromised. After the introduction of the new cohesive gel silicone implants, women with saline implants have considered implant exchange in order to take advantage of the new breast implants. Both major implant manufacturers offer financial incentives for patients who decide to” upgrade “from saline silicone implants. The new year is a perfect time to consider if breast implant exchange is right for you. Call Dr. O’Toole’s office and Sarah will be happy to arrange a consultation with Dr. O’Toole to determine if you are a candidate for breast implant exchange .
