The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has recently released a report about the “worrying advertisements for cosmetic stem cell procedures.” Referring to exhaustive studies conducted by researchers at Stanford University Medical Center, the ASPS warns that claims regarding the efficacy of stem cell treatments for facial rejuvenation and other cosmetic procedures are unsubstantiated and potentially fraudulent.
The ASPS and related organizations are currently involved in clinical studies to determine the most effective use of fat-based stem cells for cosmetic procedures. Currently, the only FDA approved cosmetic stem cell treatment is a product designed to treat facial wrinkles.
Our Commitment to You
Stem cell research has been promising in nearly every medical field and these adaptive cells may indeed prove useful in plastic and reconstructive surgery. However, without clinical trials and proper evaluation, the efficacy and potential risks of products containing stem cells is entirely unknown.
As a board-certified plastic surgeon who cares deeply about the healthy, happiness, and long-term satisfaction of our patients, Dr. O’Toole looks forward to seeing what exciting products stem cell research brings. Updating our offerings as appropriate, Dr. O’Toole will continue to only add treatments once they have shown to be both safe and effective.
