Dr. O’Toole spent several years as one of Southern California’s primary breast reconstruction surgeons. Today, he has limited his scope to breast augmentation, breast lift, and breast reduction so that he may concentrate on applying his artistry and skill to his true passion: achieving aesthetically exquisite results that exceed his patients’ expectations.
Our Breast Surgery Options
Dr. O’Toole offers a comprehensive range of breast surgery options including:
- Breast augmentation surgery to address issues with size, shape, and symmetry
- Breast lift surgery to produce a perkier and more youthful appearance
- Breast reduction surgery to restore beauty, comfort and range of motion
Breast Surgery Combinations
For some women, a single breast surgery option will be enough to produce desirable results. However, when factors combine to negatively impact the breasts, combing procedures is often a better solution. During your free consultation with board-certified Pasadena breast surgeon Dr. Martin O’Toole, all of your options will be discussed in detail to help ensure you are receiving the personalized care and individual attention you deserve.
Breast surgery combinations that may be suggested by Dr. O’Toole include:
- Breast augmentation with breast lift
- This procedure addresses issues including symmetry, size, shape, and positioning to produce a womanly and perky bust.
- Breast reduction with breast lift
- When heavy or pendulous breasts impact your health and appearance, combining reduction with a lift can restore physical ability while enhancing aesthetic appeal.
These combinations employ several of the same surgical steps and often can be done without increasing recovery time. During your breast surgery consultation at our office, Dr. O’Toole can discuss surgical steps, recovery periods, and other pertinent information in more detail.
These breast procedures may also be combined with body contouring options for more comprehensive treatments such as the Mommy Makeover. What will best serve your needs can be discussed in greater detail during your free consultation with Dr. O’Toole.

Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Surgery
When Can I Massage After Breast Surgery?
Early implant massage is generally helpful after most types of breast implant surgery to lessen the chances of capsular contracture. I recommend it once the surgical pain is minimal and the initial swelling has subsided. This can be as soon as one week post-op. I recommend that you ask your surgeon since he was the only one who was there and who knows exactly what was done. Capsular contracture can occur spontaneously and can occur again after capsulectomy. Massage is one way you can help to lessen the chance of recurrence. Some studies have also shown improvement with Accolate and Singulair. Ask your surgeon about his thoughts on this.
Which Breast Enhancement Procedure Is Right for Me?
There are different breast enhancement procedures available to meet different needs. If you are only interested in increasing the size of your breasts, a breast augmentation is a good option. Patients who want to lift drooping breasts can combine breast augmentation with a breast lift, which can produce a more youthful appearance. For those who have undergone mastectomy, breast implants can be used in breast reconstruction to restore a more feminine appearance.
Will My Insurance Cover Breast Enhancement?
Insurance does not cover cosmetic procedures, so breast enhancement is not generally covered. However, your insurance may cover breast implants for reconstructive surgery. At your initial consultation, our patient coordinator will go over whether your procedure will be covered by insurance and review the various financing options we offer to help you fit your breast augmentation procedure into your budget.
How Long Is Recovery After Breast Enhancement Surgery?
Recovery time varies depending on the specifics of the procedure. Breast implants can be placed either behind or in front of the chest muscles. When the implants are placed behind the muscles, it typically takes longer to heal. In general, breast augmentation patients can expect to return to work after a week or two. Strenuous exercise can usually be resumed about four to six weeks after surgery.
What Risks Are Associated With Breast Enhancement?
As is the case with any surgical procedure, there are some risks associated with breast augmentation, or enhancement. However, the procedure is very safe, and serious health problems rarely occur. Risks associated with breast augmentation include post-surgical infection, loss of nipple sensation, implant deflation requiring revision surgery, implant displacement, and rippling. Some patients also experience capsular contracture, a condition in which scar tissue hardens around the implant. Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Martin O’Toole will discuss all potential breast augmentation complications with you prior to surgery.
Should I Wait Until After Having Children Before Undergoing Breast Enhancement?
This is a personal decision that you must make after discussing your future pregnancy goals with Dr. O’Toole. Many women undergo breast enhancement before having children. The vast majority of these patients have no problems with future pregnancies and are able to breastfeed after their procedure.
However, it is important to understand that future pregnancies can potentially have a negative impact on the results of your procedure, requiring you to undergo a revision surgery to restore your results. You may want to factor this risk into your decision about whether to wait until after having children to undergo breast augmentation.

Which Type of Breast Implants Should I Choose?
Breast implants come in many different sizes, shapes, and materials. Before breast augmentation, you will need to decide how much you want to enhance the size of your breasts. You will also need to choose the style of implant. These come in multiple profiles for every size. The three manufactures, Allergan, Mentor and Sientra, offer a wide array of choices. Finally, you will need to decide between saline and silicone as an implant filler.
Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Martin O’Toole will discuss these options with you in great detail during your consultation and work with you to arrive at the ideal choice of implant to address your unique aesthetic goals.

What Is Breast Implant Revision Surgery?
When something goes wrong with a breast implant, patients may need to undergo revision surgery to correct the problem. This may be due to an implant deflation or rupture, or to some other complication requiring one or both implants to be replaced. Occasionally, breast augmentation patients may decide that they want their implants removed altogether.
Can I Breastfeed With Breast Implants?
In most cases, breast augmentation does not interfere with breastfeeding. However, if you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding, you should wait before undergoing breast augmentation. It is important to discuss any future pregnancy plans with Dr. O’Toole during your initial consultation, since pregnancy may negatively impact the results of your procedure.
Will Breast Implants Make It Difficult to Detect Breast Cancer?
Mammography is still possible for women with breast implants, and it is just as important to have regular appointments whether or not you have undergone breast augmentation. Mammography exams for women who do have breast implants are more time-consuming, and the implants do conceal some breast tissue. Implants placed in front of the chest muscles conceal about 25 percent of the breast tissue, while implants placed behind the muscles conceal about 10 percent.
Will Breast Augmentation Cause Me to Lose Sensation in My Nipples?
It is very rare for breast augmentation to result in any permanent loss of sensation in your nipples. In fact, this only occurs in less than 5% of patients who get breast implants. It is more common to experience a temporary loss of sensation which goes away as you heal following your procedure.
