3 Minute Read:
Body contouring procedures like tummy tuck surgery, liposuction, and even breast augmentation require extended downtime.
During this time, patients are recommended to follow a relaxed and stress-free lifestyle. In many ways, plastic surgery recovery is just as important as the surgery itself when it comes to getting optimal results.
Keep reading for a full overview of what recovery looks like for different body contouring surgeries.
Recovery After a Tummy Tuck
You should expect at least two weeks of recovery for a tummy tuck or body lift procedure before you attempt any of your normal activities.
You must have help at home during your recovery. It won’t be easy to move around and bend, so assistance is essential.
You will need to lay on your side and often move (with leisurely walks) to avoid blood clots for the first days after your surgery.
Your doctor will provide clear instructions on how to take care of your incisions and how to empty your drains (if needed).
After a week or two, you will slowly get back into your routine. Physical exercise should be avoided for at least six weeks.
Recovery After Breast Augmentation
After a breast augmentation, prepare for a recovery period of up to six weeks. Most women feel fine and can return to work and non-strenuous activities after one week, but that doesn’t mean you should rush your body.
The first week after surgery is when you will feel the most discomfort. Your doctor will prescribe pain medication, and you should take this time to rest.
Try to have someone around to help you with tasks around the house, like grocery shopping, cooking, and laundry. This will ensure you don’t strain yourself and compromise your recovery.
After the first week, patients should slowly get back to their routine. It will be important to start getting up, walking around, and even attempt light exercise. Vigorous workouts and heavy lifting will need to be avoided for several more weeks.
Recovery After Liposuction
During liposuction recovery, you will need to wear a compression garment around the treatment areas. This garment reduces swelling and discomfort while also compressing the skin to your new body contour. Recovery from liposuction usually takes several days. Many patients return to work within three to 10 days of their operation.
It will be important to get on your feet during your liposuction recovery (after a day or two), as this will promote healthy circulation and reduce the threat of blood clots.
Additionally, hydration and diet after plastic surgery are both crucial. Adequate hydration and a healthy diet work to keep tissues strong, promote cell regeneration, and reduce inflammation. It is also good to begin healthy habits around your diet immediately after liposuction. Liposuction offers permanent results but only if you maintain a stable weight.
Remember that your rest after body contouring is part of achieving optimal results.
