New Scalpel Shortens Recovery Time

A new type of scalpel actually heals as it cuts. Called the UltraCision harmonic scalpel, it’s been used for a long time in chest surgery. It’s fairly new to plastic surgery, however, but I like it because it’s gentler to the tissues, giving my patients a more rapid recovery. I especially like it in tummy tucks and face lift procedures. 

Although you can’t see it happening, the blade pulsates 50,000 times per second. When it touches tissues, it both cuts and seals the tissue at the same time. This sealing reduces both bleeding and swelling, and provides for a more permanent closure of the blood vessels with less trauma.
