A group of scientists presented a study at the 61st Annual American Academy of Dermatology meeting showing that men need twice the amount of BOTOX® Cosmetic than women do to achieve similar results. The researchers found that the reason why men need more BOTOX® Cosmetic is due the greater thickness and muscle tone of male skin.
Men currently account for 15% of BOTOX® Cosmetic users in the U.S., and that number is rapidly growing.
The Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of British Columbia, Dr. Alastair Carruthers, studied effect of four different doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic on male frown lines. According to Dr. Carruthers, men treated with between 40 units and 80 units of BOTOX® Cosmetic had the most pleasing treatment results. On the contrary, women only need between 20 units and 40 units of BOTOX® Cosmetic to achieve the same desired results. These findings help doctors determine to proper dosage of BOTOX® Cosmetic for men.
During the study, four groups of 20 males divided up and injected with 20, 40, 60, or 80 units of BOTOX® Cosmetic. At the end of the 52 weeks study, results showed no improvement of frown lines in the men injected with 20 units. All of the men tolerated the different treatment levels, including the 80 units, and there were no adverse side effects.
Among men, especially baby boomers, there has been a steady increase in the amount of non-invasive cosmetic treatments. Male cosmetic treatments have lost their stigma in the past few years and have become more prevalent in the media. Different factors, such as growing competition in the workplace, have fueled the increase in male BOTOX® Cosmetic use. According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, men are more than twice as likely to claim a work-related cause as their motivation for a cosmetic treatment than anything else.
