Implants for breast augmentation used to only come in two types: saline or silicone. However, a new type of implant known as the “gummy bear implant” has received much attention and praise in the world of plastic surgery since its recent approval by the FDA.
Gummy bear implants are named after their candied counterparts because, similar to the texture of gummy bear candies, they are firm enough to hold their shape if cut in half yet still provide a natural flexibility.
Benefits of Gummy Bear Implants
Gummy bear implants are made out of a highly concentrated silicone gel that creates a cohesive bond. This makes the implant a semi-solid rather than a liquid as found in traditional silicone implants. With gummy bear implants there is less chance of rupture because the semi-solid material does not shift within the implant. It is also unlikely that a gummy bear implant will leak if a rupture does occur because the semi-solid silicone will not pool into the breast like saline or silicone implants can.
Perhaps the greatest benefit that gummy bear implants offer is the ability to resist gravity. Saline and silicone implants are composed of liquids that can eventually give in to gravity, and these types of implants can alter the overall shape of the breasts by causing them to droop or hang over time. Conversely, due to their semi-solid silicone material, gummy bear implants are able to resist gravitational forces and maintain their position and shape longer than previous implant types.
